Job description

Introduction

The Operation Theatre Coordinator is responsible for the smooth functioning of the operation theatre, including the coordination of surgical operations, maintenance of equipment, inventory management, and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations. This role combines nursing skills, OT scrub experience, and technical maintenance expertise to optimize operational efficiency and patient care.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Operation Theatre Management:
  • Ensure the readiness of the OT environment before, during, and after surgery.
  • Maintain the highest standards of cleanliness, asepsis, and sterilization in the operation theatre.
  • Coordinate and assist with the preparation and arrangement of surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Ensure all necessary surgical tools are sterilized and available before each procedure.
  • Ensure proper patient positioning and draping before surgery, following surgeon preferences.
2. Scrub Nurse Role:
  • Assist the surgical team as a scrub nurse, maintaining sterile techniques during procedures.
  • Pass instruments, sutures, and other materials as directed by the surgeon.
  • Monitor the surgical site and maintain aseptic conditions throughout the procedure.
  • Assist with wound closure and dressing post-surgery, ensuring proper care and safety.
3. Operation Theatre Maintenance:
  • Oversee the regular cleaning, maintenance, and sterilization of all OT equipment.
  • Coordinate with the technical team for timely servicing and repair of OT machinery.
  • Ensure that all instruments and equipment are functional and meet quality and safety standards.
  • Keep track of inventory and assist with the procurement of supplies required for surgery.
4. Inventory and Supplies Management:
  • Manage and monitor the stock levels of OT consumables, ensuring no stock-outs.
  • Assist with ordering and restocking surgical supplies and instruments as needed.
  • Record and track usage of surgical supplies for efficient cost management.
5. Safety & Compliance:
  • Adhere to hospital policies, regulatory standards, and infection control protocols.
  • Ensure that all medical waste is properly disposed of in compliance with health regulations.
  • Assist with maintaining patient records, ensuring proper documentation of surgeries, medications, and patient observations.
6. Team Coordination:
  • Act as a liaison between the surgical team, nursing staff, and OT management.
  • Support the surgeon and anesthesiologist in patient care before, during, and after the surgery.
  • Supervise and train junior staff and new recruits in OT procedures and safety measures.
7. Communication & Reporting:
  • Maintain effective communication with the surgical team regarding patient status, surgery updates, and any issues during procedures.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions or concerns regarding OT supplies to management.
  • Assist in preparing reports for audits and quality improvement programs.
Qualifications and Requirements:

  1. Education: B.Sc. Nursing or equivalent in Nursing from a recognized institution.
  2. Experience:
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in an OT Scrub Nurse role.
  • Hands-on experience with OT maintenance and sterilization techniques.
Skills & Competencies:
  • Strong knowledge of aseptic techniques and surgical protocols.
  • Ability to work under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Attention to detail, ensuring patient safety and accurate records.
  • Excellent communication skills to liaise with medical teams and support staff.
  • Knowledge of OT equipment maintenance and sterilization standards.
  • Basic knowledge of infection control and safety regulations in the OT setting.
